Breach Depressions Least Cost

The Breach Depressions Least Cost tool improves a digital elevation model (DEM) by handling low-lying areas or depressions with efficiency. This tool is similar to fixing the landscape in a digital map so it better represents how water moves over the terrain in the real world.

Input parameters

  • Input raster DEM file – Select the raster file that will be breached.

Output parameters

  • Output raster file – Enter the name for the new breached file.
  • Maximum search distance for breach paths in cells – Sets the limit on how far the tool will search within the DEM grid to find a suitable path for breaching a depression.
  • Optional flag indicating whether to minimize breach distances – Determines if the tool should prioritize shorter breach paths when connecting depressions to lower elevation cells.
  • Optional flag indicating whether to fill any remaining unbreached depressions – Allows the tool to automatically fill any depressions that remain after the breaching process to facilitate proper water flow in the DEM.
