When to use

Add this to articles that need help from other editors because they sound like Advertising|advertisement]]s. For example, they may tell users to buy the company's product, provide price lists, give links to online sellers, or use unencyclopedic or meaningless buzzword]]s.

The advert tag is for articles that are directly trying to sell a product to our readers. Don't add this tag simply because the material in the article shows a company or a product in an overall positive light or because it provides an encyclopedic summary of a product's features.

How to use

articles
  • For articles needing major clean-up, place tlx|Advert|article}} at the top of the article to alert readers. Adding just {{Advert}} is equivalent to this.
sections
  • To mark specific sections instead of the whole article, place tlx|Advert|section}} at the top of the section.
remarks
  • To replace the text "an advertisement", you may use tlx|Advert|article/section|yourtext}} or tlx|Advert|2=yourtext}}

Add a date parameter like this: tlx|Advert|date=November 2024}}. A bot will do this for you later, if you didn't.

This template adds articles to :Category:Articles with a promotional tone]]

Template:Ambox

Mbox templates This is the Tl|Ambox or Article message box meta-template.

It is used to build article message box templates such as tl|underlinked. It offers several different colours, uses default images if no image parameter is given, and has some other features.

Common parameters

The box on the right shows the most common parameters that are accepted by tl|ambox. The purpose of each is described below.

Common parameters
{{Ambox
| name  =
| subst = <includeonly>{{subst:substcheck}}</includeonly>
| small = {{{small|}}}
| type  =
| image =
| sect  = {{{1|}}}
| issue =
| fix   =
| date  = {{{date|}}}
| cat   =
| all   =
}}

name

The name parameter specifies the name of the template, without the Template namespace prefix. For example tl|underlinked specifies para|name|Underlinked.

This parameter should be updated if the template is ever moved. The purpose of this parameter is twofold:

  • If incorrectly substituted, it allows the meta-template to notify the name of the template which has been substituted, which may help editors to fix the problem.
  • It allows the template to have a more useful display on its template page, for example to show the date even when not specified, and to apply categorisation of the template itself.

subst

The subst parameter allows the meta-template to detect whether the template has been incorrectly substituted, and give an appropriate warning. It will also add such pages to :Category:Pages with incorrectly substituted templates. Just copy the code exactly as it appears in the box.

small

The small parameter should be passed through the template, as this will allow editors to use the small format by specifying |small=left on an article:

Otherwise the standard format will be produced:

Other variations:

  • For templates which should never be small, specify |small=no or do not pass the small parameter at all.
  • For templates which should always be small, just specify |small=left.
  • For templates which should default to small, try |small={{{small|left}}}. This will allow an editor to override by using |small=no on an article.

type

The type parameter defines the colour of the left bar, and the image that is used by default. The type is chosen not on aesthetics but is based on the type of issue that the template describes. The seven available types and their default images are shown below. {{Ambox

nocat=true type = speedy db-g1 and {{[[Template:db-g3. db-g3.

]]}}

{{Ambox

nocat=true type = delete afd and {{[[Template:prod. prod.

]]}}

{{Ambox

nocat=true type = content POV and {{[[Template:globalize. globalize.

]]}}

{{Ambox

nocat=true type = style cleanup and {{[[Template:underlinked. underlinked.

]]}}

{{ambox

nocat=true type = notice current and {{[[Template:inuse. inuse.

]]}}

{{Ambox

nocat=true type = move text = type=move – Merge, split and transwiki proposals, such as {{[[Template:split and copy to wiktionary. split and copy to wiktionary.

]]}}

If no type parameter is given the template defaults to |type=notice.

image

You can choose a specific image to use for the template by using the image parameter. Images are specified using the standard syntax for inserting files in Wikipedia (see Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Images#How to place an image.) Widths of 40-50px are typical. For example:

  • {{tl|POV specifies |image=[[File:Unbalanced scales.svg|40px|link=|alt=]] and looks like this:

{{POV|date=April 2013

  • {{tl|underlinked specifies |image=[[File:Ambox wikify.svg|50x40px|link=|alt=]] and looks like this:

{{underlinked|date=April 2013

Please note:

  • If no image is specified then the default image corresponding to the type is used. (See #type above.)
  • If |image=none is specified, then no image is used and the text uses the whole message box area.
  • If an icon is purely decorative and also in the public domain, accessibility can be improved by suppressing the link to the file page by adding "|link=|alt=" as seen above.

sect

Many article message templates begin with the text This article ... and it is often desirable that this wording change to This section ... if the template is used on a section instead. Other possibilities include This list ... and This biographical article ...

To facilitate this functionality, pass |sect={{{1|}}}. This will allow editors to type section as the first unnamed parameter of the template to change the wording. For example, {{Advert|section}} produces: Script error: No such module "Unsubst". <noprint> </noprint>

If using this feature, be sure to remove the first two words ("This article") from the template's text, otherwise it will be duplicated.

issue and fix

The issue parameter is used to describe the issue with the article. Try to keep it short and to-the-point (approximately 10-20 words) and be sure to include a link to a relevant policy or guideline.

The fix parameter contains some text which describes what should be done to improve the article. It may be longer than the text in issue, but should not usually be more than two sentences.

When the template is in its compact form (when placed inside {{multiple issues}}

) or small form (when using |small=left), the issue is the only text that will be displayed. For example, {{Citation style}}

defines
  • |issue=This article '''has an unclear citation style'''.
  • |fix=The references used may be made clearer with a different or consistent style of Wikipedia:Citing sources|citation, Wikipedia:Footnotes|footnoting, or Wikipedia:External links|external linking.

When used stand-alone it produces the whole text: Script error: No such module "Unsubst".

But when used inside {{multiple issues}}

or with |small=left it displays only the issue:

Script error: No such module "Unsubst". Script error: No such module "Unsubst".

date

Passing the date parameter through to the meta-template means that the date that the article is tagged may be specified by an editor (or more commonly a WP:bot|bot). This will be displayed after the message in a smaller font.

Passing this parameter also enables :Category:Wikipedia maintenance categories sorted by month|monthly cleanup categorisation when the cat parameter is also defined.

cat

This parameter defines a monthly cleanup category. If |cat=CATEGORY then:

  • articles will be placed in Category:CATEGORY from DATE if |date=DATE is specified.
  • articles will be placed in Category:CATEGORY if the date is not specified.

For example, {{no footnotes}}

specifies |cat=Articles lacking in-text citations and so an article with the template {{No footnotes|date=June 2010}} will be placed in :Category:Articles lacking in-text citations from June 2010.

all

The all parameter defines a category into which all articles should be placed.

Other parameters

The box on the right shows all possible parameters for this template. However, it is not recommended to copy this, because it will never be required to use all parameters simultaneously.

All parameters
{{Ambox
| name        =
| subst       = <includeonly>{{subst:</includeonly><includeonly>substcheck}}</includeonly>
| small       = {{{small|}}}
| type        =

| all2        =
| cat3        =
| all3        =
}}<noinclude>
{{Documentation}}
</noinclude>

imageright

An image on the right side of the message box may be specified using this parameter. The syntax is the same as for the image parameter, except that the default is no image.

smallimage and smallimageright

Images for the small format box may be specified using these parameters. They will have no effect unless |small=left is specified.

class

A custom Cascading Style Sheets|CSS class to apply to the box.

style and textstyle

Optional CSS values may be defined, without quotation marks " " but with the ending semicolons ;.

  • style specifies the style used by the entire message box table.
  • textstyle relates to the text cell.

text and smalltext

Instead of specifying the issue and the fix it is possible to use the text parameter instead.

Customised text for the small format can be defined using smalltext.

Additional categorisation parameters

  • cat2 and cat3 provide additional monthly categories; see #cat.
  • all2 and all3 provide additional categories into which all articles are placed, just like #all.

Technical notes

  • This meta-template uses the ambox CSS classes in MediaWiki:Common.css. The classes can also be used directly in a Help:Table|wikitable if special functionality is needed. See the Wikipedia:Ambox CSS classes|how-to guide for that.
  • If you need to use special characters in the text parameter then you need to escape them like this:
{{Ambox
| text  = <div>
Equal sign = and a start and end brace { } work fine as they are.
But here is a pipe &#124; and two end braces <nowiki>}}</nowiki>.
And now a pipe and end braces <nowiki>|}}</nowiki>.
</div>
}}
  • The <div> tags that surround the text in the example above are usually not needed. But if the text contains line breaks then sometimes we get weird line spacing. This especially happens when using vertical dotted lists. Then use the div tags to fix that.
  • This template uses CSS classes in MediaWiki:Common.css for most of its looks, thus it is fully skinnable.
  • This template calls {{Ambox/core}}
or {{ambox/small}}
which holds most of the code for {{Ambox}}

, while {{Ambox}}

itself does parameter preprocessing.
  • Internally, this meta-template uses HTML markup instead of wikimarkup for the table code. That is the usual way meta-templates are made, since wikimarkup has several drawbacks. For instance, it makes it harder to use m:Help:ParserFunctions|parser functions and some special characters in parameters.
  • The default images for this meta-template are in png format instead of svg format. The main reason is that some older web browsers have trouble with the transparent background that MediaWiki renders for svg images. The png images here have hand optimised transparent background colour so they look good in all browsers. Note that svg icons only look somewhat bad in the old browsers, thus such hand optimisation is only worth the trouble for very widely used icons.
  • For more technical details see the Template talk:Ambox|talk page and the "See also" links below. Since this template works almost exactly like {{Tmbox}}

, {{Imbox}}

, {{Cmbox}}

and {{Ombox}}
their talk pages and related pages might also contain more details.

This template is used on 33,000+ pages, and changes to it will be widely noticed. Please test any changes in the template's /sandbox or /testcases subpages, or in a user subpage, and consider discussing changes at the talk page before implementing them.

The quick Template:Color can be used to add a span of text with any given text color, such as an RGB hex code, #C9E72A, or any of the web colors: red, blue, green, moccasin, or darkorchid, etc. The foreground text color is set, but to reset the background color, see: Template:Bg|bg.

Usage

{{color|name of color or hex code of color|Text}}

For example:

{{color|red|Hello, world!}}          gives:  Hello, world!

{{color|#00F000|Hello, world!}}    gives:  Hello, world!

Wikitext generated:

<span style="color:{{{1|}}}">{{{2|}}}</span>

See: Web colors, for a list of colors. A misspelled color name will not be reported, but will cause the text to remain as black text.

Performance considerations

The template merely uses a span tag:  <span style="color:{{{1}}}">{{{2}}}</span>. It runs at speeds in excess of 700 per second, and so it is functionally identical to the longer span-tag markup.

Purpose

This template gives an equation passed in as numbered parameter {{{1}}} a number {{{2}}}, which is displayed in the far right column. This also creates an anchor (#equation-{{{2}}}), which can be adjusted with the id parameter.

Usage

{{Equation|1=e=m c^2\,|2=1}}
{{Equation|1=a^2+b^2=c^2\,|2=2}}
{{Equation|1=X(t)= V_0 * t + A*t^2\,|2=3}}

results in:

Note: Wikisyntax (e.g. formatting templates like {{sub}}

) won't work in this template, use LaTeX syntax instead.

This is the {{used in system}}

message box.

It is meant to be put at the top of the documentation for templates that are used in the Wikipedia user interface.

Note! It is normal that some of the links in the message box are red.

Usage

The template can be used as is. But it can also take some parameters:

  • First parameter allows you to change the second half of the heading text. See examples below.
  • Second parameter is the name of some other talk page if you want discussion to be made there instead. But a better option might be to redirect the talkpage of your template to that other talkpage.

Here are some examples:

This is the {{case preserving encode}}

meta-template.

This template is used inside the templates tl|sec link, tl|sec link auto, and tl|sec link image. (And it might be used in other templates too.)

This template is used to URL-encode wiki page names for external links to other MediaWiki wikis. Since MediaWiki's own URL-encode functions don't work when making links to other MediaWiki wikis.

This template preserves the case of the first character, and it correctly preserves the namespace name.

This template is a "subroutine" of {{Citation/core}}

used for conditionally making links for the chapter= and title= fields in a citation.

It is invoked as:

{{Citation/make link
| 1 = <value of IncludedWorkURL= or URL= or PMC= parameters>
| 2 = <value of IncludedWorkTitle= or Title= parameters>
}}

It uses the following algorithm:

  1. If the first parameter is empty, it returns the second parameter as plain text.
  2. If the first parameter is a URL, it returns the second parameter wrapped inside an external link to the first.

This "subroutine" is designed for {{Citation/core}}

and makes assumptions that may not be valid elsewhere.

Examples:

  • "{{Citation/make link||BBC News front page}}" produces "BBC News front page".
  • "{{Citation/make link|http://news.bbc.co.uk/|BBC News front page}}" produces "BBC News front page".

When to use

This template should be used only on articles that have sources.

It may be used with {{Refimprove}}

or other check references templates. This template should not be used with XMS Wiki:Stub|stubs.

The most common correct use of this template is to identify an article that uses more than one major citation style (e.g., half the citations use Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Layout#Standard appendices and footers|ref tags]], and half are Wikipedia:Parenthetical referencing|parenthetical citations]]).

Do not place on articles containing all parenthetical citations! They're not as easy to spot with a quick glance as superscripted blue numbers, but they are an acceptable form of Wikipedia:Inline citation|inline citation]]. Wikipedia:Citing sources|Wikipedia's guidelines]] generally prohibit editors from changing from one acceptable form of inline citations to another, especially for reasons of personal preference or to make one article match the style in another article.

This template may be removed by anyone who fixes the problems with confusing citation styles.

How to use

To use this template, place {{Citation style|date=November 2024}} on the article page or talk page in a location that may aid in conveying the message of the template. This template may be used within tl|Multiple issues and placement of this template on the article page is guided by Wikipedia:Template messages/Cleanup|Template messages/Cleanup]]. The following parameters may be specified for this template:

  • |date= should preferably be used to categorize the article in a subcategory of :Category:Wikipedia references cleanup. This helps with addressing aged cleanup messages. (e.g., {{Citation style|date=November 2024}}.)
  • |details= may be used to provide more details on some of the aspects that should be addressed for the given article. (e.g., {{Citation style|date=November 2024|details=In particular, citation titles should be specified}})
  • | A first unnamed parameter may be used to specify whether the template applies to the entire article or a section of the article (e.g., {{Citation style|section|date=November 2024}}. If not specified, the first unnamed parameter defaults to "article."

Operation

This template will categorise tagged articles into :Category:Wikipedia references cleanup and :Category:Articles covered by WikiProject Wikify.

This template is a Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Self-references to avoid|self-reference]].

Usage

This template simply returns the passed parameter. It can be used to exclude parts of a page (or template) in print versions. This works since it is a member of Category:Exclude in print.

Please note that the books functionality is still experimental. Hiding text in "PDF/book print" currently works different from hiding text for "normal printing". To hide something both in book and in normal printing, please use class="noprint" or {{noprint}}

.

Please also note that this template has an unresolved bug such that it hides edit links from any included sections, see Template talk:Hide in print#Hides edit link bug. This means that using this template may inconvenience wikipedia editors. However, without the Hide in print wrapper, any printed book or PDF will include possibly unwanted parts. Therefore, please avoid using this template to hide sections.

{{hide in print|text to be hidden}}

{{hide in print|1=text to be hidden that uses an = sign}}

This template is obsolete.

This is the {{high-risk}}

message box.

It is meant to be put at the top of the documentation for the most high-use (high-risk) templates. That is for templates used on 100,000 pages or more.

For templates used on 2000 - 100,000 pages we instead recommend using {{high-use}}

which has a softer wording.

Note! It is normal that some of the links in the message box are red.

Usage

The template can be used as is. But it can also take some parameters:

  • First parameter is the number of pages. See Wikipedia:Database reports/Templates with the most transclusions to find out how many pages use a given template.
  • Second parameter is the name of some other talk page if you want discussion to be made there instead. But a better option might be to redirect the talkpage of your template to that other talkpage.

Here are some examples:

{{high-risk| 300,000+ | Wikipedia talk:High-risk templates }}

{{high-risk| 300,000+ }}

{{high-risk| | Wikipedia talk:High-risk templates }}

The full code for a /doc page top can look like this:

{{documentation subpage}}
{{high-risk| 300,000+ }}
<!-- PLEASE ADD CATEGORIES AND INTERWIKIS AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE -->

Technical details

The /sandbox and /testcases links are the standard names for such subpages. If those pages are created then the green /doc box for the template will detect them and link to them in its heading. For instance see the top of this documentation.

This template automatically displays a documentation box like you are seeing now, of which the content is transcluded from another page. It is intended for pages which are transcluded in other pages, i.e. templates, whether in the template namespace or not.

Usage

Normal /doc

<noinclude>{{Documentation}}</noinclude>

Any /doc page

<noinclude>{{Documentation|Template:any page/doc}}</noinclude>

In-line content

<noinclude>{{Documentation|content=This is documentation.}}</noinclude>

In-line content with [view][edit] links

<noinclude>{{Documentation
|1 = Template:any page/doc
|content ={{Template:any page/doc|parameters}}
}}</noinclude>

Best practice

This code should be added at the bottom of the template code, with no extra space before "<noinclude>" (which would cause extra space on pages where the template is used). The parameter can be used as shown above to transclude an arbitrary documentation page.

Add categories and interwiki links to the documentation page inside <includeonly> </includeonly> tags.

If the documentation page contains includeonly or noinclude tags as part of the documentation, replace the "<" with "&lt;".

Customizing display

Overrides exist to customize the output in special cases:

  • {{documentation| heading = ...}} − change the text of the "documentation" heading. If this is set to blank, the entire heading line (including the first [edit] link) will also disappear.

Functions

If the documentation page doesn't exist, the "edit" link includes a preload parameter so that clicking it will pre-fill the edit form with the basic documentation page format.

Rationale

Use of this template allows templates to be protected where necessary, while allowing anyone to edit the documentation, categories, and interwiki links.

Template:Ifequal

<noprint> </noprint>

Note page has hidden operative code when viewed directly.
This template is used to extend the parser function '#ifeq:' to multiple tests.
  • The returned string is defined TRUE if any test pair of input parameters satisfies as if presented in any single #ifeq: test.
  • The returned value is essentially TRUE OR FALSE— garbage characters OR a null (computer) string, respectively. Thus it is suitable for testing by a simple #if:-then-else conditional on the calling page.
  • Applications are generally to display selective text for a set of pages, as in for example, a common usage page for templates, selected by specific page name cases.
  • This template takes upto eight pairs of arguments (i.e 16 m:Help:Template|numbered parameters]]), tests the odd verus the even, and returns true if any pair matches using the parser function '#ifeq:'.

This can be used to test for criteria which may be satisfied by some combination of mulitple magic words, such as {{SITENAME}} or {{PAGENAME}}.
