There are three coverages types that are specific to a HydroGeoSphere model: boundary conditions, observations, and hydrographs. The coverage type is set by right-clicking on a coverage in the Project Explorer and selecting Coverage Type→HydroGeoSphere, and then selecting the desired coverage from the right-click menu.
When features on the HydroGeoSpheres coverage have been defined, the coverages need to be mapped to the HydroGeoSphere simulation. This is done by right-clicking on the coverage and selecting the Apply to submenu then selecting the desired simulation. Coverages that are not applied to a HydroGeoSphere simulation will not have the properties in the coverage included in the simulation run.

Boundary Conditions Coverage
GMS uses feature objects to define the boundary conditions on a HydroGeoSphere boundary conditions coverage. This includes points, arcs, and polygons. Each of these feature objects type have their own unique properties dialog where the parameters are set. GMS uses this coverage to pin point all the grid components associated with the boundary conditions so they can be included in the HydroGeoSphere simulation run. “Vertical range” is now an available option and, if it’s set to “Top/bottom elevations”, there are “Top elevation” and “Bottom elevation” options.
- Vertical range – Vertical range for porous media.
- "Max/min node sheets" – Boundary conditions will be applied between the minimum and maximum node sheets.
- Maximum sheet – Value for the maximum node sheets.
- Minimum sheet – Value for the minimum node sheets.
- "Top/bottom elevations" – Boundary conditions will be applied between the top and bottom elevations.
- Top elevation – Value for the top elevation.
- Bottom elevation – Value for the bottom elevation.
- "Max/min node sheets" – Boundary conditions will be applied between the minimum and maximum node sheets.
Observations Coverage
This coverage type allows for the creation of observation points. HydroGeoSphere will output time series information at each observation point.
Hydrographs Coverage
Assigning "hydrograph" to an arc causes HydroGeoSphere to record hydrograph data during the model run. The coverage then needs to be added to the simulation. Upon the completing the simulation run, HGS will output detailed flow rate information at each time step for each arc that has been assigned a hydrograph.
