SMS:CAD Data Workflow

To use CAD data in SMS, use the following steps:

1. SMS setup.
1. Start SMS, or clear existing projects in SMS. If SMS is already running, select File | Delete All. A new project can also be started by using CTRL + N. 2. Set the display projection. Select the Display | Projection... command. Set the horizontal and vertical projection using the Display Projection dialog.

2. Gather CAD data files.
Make certain all CAD data files for the project have been collected. Before importing, check that the data is in a file type that SMS can recognize. For CAD data these are DXF and DWG files.

3. Open CAD data files.
Use the File | Open command to launch the Open dialog. Locate the files to be opened. Multiple files may be opened at once using the Ctrl key. The data should load in layers into the Project Explorer.

4. Review and edit data.
Check data to see that it shows up in the Project Explorer and any feature objects are in the Graphics Window. Check data projection. Check data attributes. Convert data to any of the follow: CAD → Map CAD Faces → 2D Scatter triangles CAD Points → 2D Scatter

5. Export to CAD Data (optional).
Project data can be converted to CAD data. Right-click on an empty space in the Project Explorer and select Convert to CAD. Save a CAD data file. CAD data will be loaded into the Project Explorer
