SMS:GIS Data Workflow

To work with GIS data into SMS, use the following steps:

Using the GIS module in SMS

1. Import GIS data.
Use the File | Open... command to import GIS data files such as Shapefiles, MIF/MID files, Lidar files, or raster files. Alternatively, drag and drop the file into the Graphics Window in SMS.

2. Add GIS properties.
Right-click on the GIS object and select the Join Table to Layer command. Use the Select Table File dialog to specify table information to add to the GIS object. Use the Join Table dialog to specify the table data should be added to the GIS object.

3. Convert GIS data.
1. Convert shapefile to feature objects. Select the Mapping | Shapes → Feature Objects command. Use the GIS to Feature Objects Wizard to create feature objects on a map coverage. 1. Convert polygons to TIN. Select the Mapping | Polygon → TIN command. The TIN will appear in the scatter module.

Using GIS with ArcObjects® in SMS

Requires having a valid ArGIS® license.

1. Enable ArcObjects®.
Switch to the GIS module. Select the Data | Enable ArcObjects command.

2. Import GIS data using ArcObjects®.
Select the Data | Add Data command. Use the Select Data dialog to locate and open the GIS files such as such as Shapefiles, MIF/MID files, LIDAR files, or raster files.

3. Add GIS properties.
Right-click on the GIS object and select the Join Table to Layer command. Use the Select Table to join to dialog to specify table information to add to the GIS object. If it appears, use the Join dialog to specify which attribute field in the GIS object will receive the table data.

4. Manage GIS layer properties.
Right-click on the GIS object and select the Properties command. Use the Layer Properties dialog to specify layer properties.

5. Convert ArcObjects®.

1. Convert to feature objects. Select and make active the map coverage that will receive the feature objects from the GIS object. Switch to the GIS module. Select the Mapping | ArcObjects → Feature Objects command. Use the GIS to Feature Objects Wizard to map to convert the ArcObjects® to the map coverage. 2. Convert to geodatabase. Select the Mapping | Feature Objects → Geodatabase command. Save the geodatabase file.
