To use pilot points and PEST to calibrate an existing MODFLOW model, use the following process.

1. Create pilot points.
Use one of the following processes to create 2D scatter points to use as pilot points.
1. Create fixed scatter points
  1. Switch to the 2D Scatter Point module.
  2. Use the Create Scatter Points Create Points Tool.svg tool to create scatter points in the desired location.
  3. Use the Select Scatter Points Select Point Tool.svg tool along with the XYZF bar to adjust the scatter point values.
2. Convert existing data to 2D scatter points.
1. 2D grid to 2D scatter point.
  1. Select the Grid | Convert To> | 2D Scatter Points menu command.
  2. Enter a name in the Scatter Point Set Name dialog.
2. 2D mesh to 2D scatter point.
  1. Select the Mesh | Convert To> | 2D Scatter Points menu command.
  2. Enter a name in the Scatter Point Set Name dialog.
3. Map to 2D scatter point.
  1. Select the Feature Objects |Map → 2D Scatter Points menu command.
  2. Enter a name in the Scatter Point Set Name dialog.
4. TIN to 2D scatter point.
  1. Select the TINs | Convert To> | 2D Scatter Points menu command.
5. Boreholes to 2D scatter point.
  1. Use the Select Contacts tool to select all contacts to be converted.
  2. Select the Boreholes | Advanced> | Contacts → 2D Scatter Points menu command.
  3. Enter a name in the Scatter Point Set Name dialog.
6. MODFLOW Layers to 2D scatter point.
  1. Select the Grid | MODFLOW Layers → 2D Scatter Points menu command.
  2. Enter a parameters in the MODFLOW Layers → Scatter Points dialog.
2. Set pilot point parameters.
  1. Select the MODFLOW | Paramters menu command.
  2. In the Parameters dialog, set values to "Pilot points" and set any other parameters.
  3. Click the Blank button from Parameters dialog.png button to set interpolation options in the 2D Interplation Options dialog.
3. Edit PEST parameters.
  1. Select the MODFLOW | Parameter Estimation menu command.
  2. Set parameter estimation options in the PEST dialog.
