A GSSHA groundwater model begins with an existing long-term simulation project with all the parameters for a basic surface water simulation already defined. To set up a groundwater model in GSSHA with WMS, do the following:
1. Add an aquifer bottom map.

- Add XYZ data for the aquifer bottom.
- Interpolate the aquifer bottom data set to the 2D grid to create a new continuous map for the aquifer bottom.
- Assign the new aquifer bottom continuous map to a folder holding the continuous maps under the 2D grid in the Project Explorer.

2. Add an initial water table elevation map.

- Add XYZ data for the initial water table elevations.
- Interpolate the initial water table elevations data set to the 2D grid to create a new continuous map for the aquifer bottom.
- Assign the new initial water table elevations continuous map to a folder holding the continuous maps under the 2D grid in the Project Explorer.
- Check the water table elevation data and make sure it is consistent with the height of the ground elevation and depth of the aquifer bottom. One of the ways to do this is to enter the elevation data in the Data Calculator.

3. Define hydraulic conductivity and porosity.

- Create a new coverage to define the geology for the groundwater model.
- The data for the geology coverage could be in the form of a shapefile.
- Map the shapefile to feature objects and add it to the geology coverage.
- Use the Maps... dialog under the GSSHA menu to create an index map with the coverage.

4. Set groundwater job control.
|
- Go to Job Control... under the GSSHA menu.
- Turn on Groundwater and enter the parameters, which could include: time step, LSOR direction, LSOR convergence, relaxation coefficient, leakage rate, and/or aquifer cell size.

5. Define the hydraulic conductivity and porosity map.
|
- Select Map Tables... under the GSSHA menu.
- On the Groundwater tab, set all the parameters for the index map.

6. Output control.
|
- Finish setting the parameters for the job control and output control.
|
7. Save and run the groundwater model.
|
- Save and run the GSSHA groundwater model simulation.
