To set up a groundwater model in GSSHA with SMS, do the following:

Expand1. Start a new SMS project.
Expand1. Start SMS, or clear existing projects in SMS. If SMS is already running, select File | Delete All. A new project can also be started by using CTRL + N. Expand2. Set the display projection. Select the Display | Projection... command. Set the horizontal and vertical projection using the Display Projection dialog.

Expand2. Import data.

Expand1. Gather and open image files. Images are imported into the GIS module in SMS. Expand1. Open local images. Load images from local computer files using the File | Open... command. Alternatively, drag and drop the file into the Graphics Window in SMS. Expand2. Import images from the web. Expand1. Import static images. Use the File | Import from Web command. Select a location in the Virtual Map Locator. Set a projection for the project using the Display Projections dialog. Use the Data Service Options dialog to select a web service or catalog. Use the Advanced options if needing to access a unique or unavailable data source. Save the data file and import the data into SMS. Expand2. Import dynamic images. Use the File | Add Online Maps command. Select a location in the Virtual Map Locator. Set a projection for the project using the Display Projections dialog. Use the Data Service Options dialog to select a web service or catalog. Save the data file and import the data into SMS. Expand2. Gather and open geometric data files. Expand1. Import map data. Use the File | Open... command to import map data such as Map files, boundary ID files, or boundary XY files. Alternately, drag and drop the file into the Graphics Window in SMS. Expand2. Import GIS data. Use the File | Open... command to import GIS data files such as Shapefiles, MIF/MID files, Lidar files, or raster files. Alternatively, drag and drop the file into the Graphics Window in SMS. Expand3. Import scatter data. Use File | Open... to open files with scatter data such as scatter point files, ASCII dataset files, binary dataset files, tabular data files, or XYZ files. Alternatively, drag and drop the file into the Graphics Window in SMS. Use the File Import Wizard to specify how to import the data. Expand4. Import CAD data. Verify the CAD file type is readable by SMS before importing it. SMS can import DXF and DWG files. Use the File | Open... command to launch the Open dialog (or drag and drop) to import the CAD files. The data should load in layers into the Project Explorer. Expand5. Review and set object projections. Right-click on an object in the Project Explorer and select the Projection command. Set the horizontal and vertical projection using the Object Projection dialog. To set a global projection, use the Horizontal Projection dialog.

Expand3. Review and edit the the background elevation (scatter) data.

Expand1. Review elevation data for errors. Expand1. Use the Dataset Info dialog. Find the "Z", "elevation" or "depth" datasets on the geometric object (mesh, TIN, grid, raster) that is being reviewed Right-click on elevation data and select Info. Review information in the Dataset Info dialog to see that the range of values are as expected. Expand2. Use contour display options. Turn off Points and Triangles, then turn on Contours in the Scatter tab of the Display Options dialog. Set contour options in the Contours tab. The "Color Fill" option is recommended for this. Look for inconsistent points (points with values much higher/lower than their neighbors or regions where no data points exist). Verify that the region being modeled is covered by the elevation/depth data and there are no holes. Expand3. Rotate the elevation data. Use the Rotate tool to examine the elevation data from different angles. Expand2. Remove erroneous points and triangles. After reviewing the imported data, points or triangles covering regions where there are no data points should be deleted. This could include outlier points or thin triangles. Expand1. Use the Scatter Options dialog. Open the Scatter Options dialog. Select or delete duplicate points. Select or delete long triangles. Select thin triangles. Use a triangulation optimization option. Expand2. Manually remove points. Use Select Scatter Point tool to select erroneous points in the scatter set. Review and edit point data in the Edit Window. Delete erroneous points. Expand3. Add breaklines. Select the Create Breakline tool. Click along points of a common elevation, such as at a bank toe or levee crest, to connect these points in the surface. Use the Backspace key to back up if an erroneous selection is made. Double-click or press Enter key to complete the breakline. Expand4. Merge elevation datasets. Select the Scatter | Merge Sets command. Use the Merge Scatter Sets dialog to select elevation data to be merged.

Expand4. Create a watershed delineated mesh

Expand1. Import elevation raster Use the File | Open... command to import GIS data files such as Shapefiles, MIF/MID files, Lidar files, or raster files. Alternatively, drag and drop the file into the Graphics Window in SMS. Expand2. Create map coverage Select Map Data in the Project Explorer and use the New Coverage right-click command. Use the New Coverage dialog to create a new coverage by selecting the desired coverage type, and naming the coverage. Expand3. Create an outlet point Use the Create Feature Node tool to create an outlet point. Expand4. Run the watershed from raster tool Open the Toolbox . Open the Watershed from Raster tool. Enter the raster, output coverage, and other parameters, then run the tool. Expand5. Clean objects for all coverages Expand1. Create additional vertices on arcs. Use the Create Feature Vertex tool to add vertices along arcs. Expand2. Refine the arc shape. Use the Select Feature Vertex tool and the Select Feature Node tool to move/edit existing arcs and refine the shape by dragging the nodes/vertices. Use the Select Feature Arc tool to move entire arcs . Expand3. Split arcs. An existing arc can be split by: Expand1. Converting a vertex to a node. Use the Select Feature Vertex tool and right-click on a vertex along an arc. Select the Convert to Node command to split the arc into two arcs. Expand2. Add a node the arc. Use the Create Feature Node tool to add a node on an arc in order to split it into two arcs. Expand3. Add a new connecting arc. Use the Create Feature Arc tool to start or end a new arc on an existing arc to split the existing arc into two arcs. Expand4. Use the Split Arcs Tool. Right-click on an arc using the Select Feature Arc tool and select the Split Arc(s)... command. Use the Split Arcs Tool to divide arcs. Expand5. Split overlapping arcs using the Clean Options dialog. Select overlapping arcs using the Select Feature Arc tool. Use the Feature Objects | Clean command to bring up the Clean Options dialog. Select the Intersect selected arcs option (for selected arcs) or Intersect arcs option (for all overlapping arcs) to split the arcs. Expand4. Merge arcs. Two arcs that share an end node can be merged together. Select the shared node using the Select Feature Node tool. Right-click on the node and select the Convert to Vertex command to merge the arcs. If desired, the Select Feature Vertex tool can be used to select and delete the new vertex. Expand5. Smooth arcs. The variability or roughness of an arc can be reduced. Right-click on an arc using the Select Feature Arc tool and select the Smooth Arc(s)... command. Use the Smooth Arcs Tool to reduce the variability of the arc. Expand6. Prune arcs. Concave sections of the arc can be removed. Right-click on an arc using the Select Feature Arc tool and select the Prune Arc(s)... command. Use the Prune Arcs dialog to remove concave sections. Expand7. Extend/trim arcs. Extend or shorten an arc to match an existing arc's length. Using the Select Feature Arc tool, select two intersecting arcs. Right-click on an arc using the Select Feature Arc tool and select the Extend/Trim Arc... command. Use the Trim/Extend Arc dialog to select the target arc and source arc. Expand6. Create channel polygons with the Polygons from Arcs tool. Open the Toolbox . Open the Polygons from Arcs tool Enter the input coverage and other parameters, then run the tool. Expand8. Merge Coverages Select multiple coverages that have feature objects which need to be on the same coverage. Use the Merge Coverages right-click command. Right-click on the new coverage and set the correct coverage type. Use the Clean Options dialog to resolve conflicting feature object data in the new coverage. Expand9. Set polygon properties Expand1. Select a polygon and open the 2D Mesh Polygon Properties dialog. Use the Select Poylgon tool to select a polygon. Double-click on the selected polygon or use the Feature Objects | Attributes menu command. Expand2. Set the Mesh Type, Bathymetry Type, and Material Type for the polygon. Mesh types include Patch, Paving, Scalar Paving Density, and Constant Paving Density. Bathymetry type describes the elevation/topography source for the mesh nodes. Bathymetry types include a constant elevation value, interpolated elevation values from a scatter set, or interpolated elevation values from an existing mesh. Material types can be assigned to a polygon using materials previously created in Materials Data dialog. Expand3. Preview and edit the polygon mesh. Select the Preview Mesh button. Use the preview tools to edit the mesh. Set Arc Options to adjust distribution of vertices. Use Node Options to change how arcs are treated when using a patch mesh type. Expand10. Create mesh Open the Toolbox . Open the UGrid from Coverage tool. Select the coverage, name the output, then run the tool.

Expand5. Define and smooth streams

Expand1. Create GSSHA map coverage Expand1. Create new coverage from scratch. Select Map Data in the Project Explorer and use the New Coverage right-click command. Use the New Coverage dialog to create a new coverage by selecting the desired coverage type, and naming the coverage. Expand2. Create new coverage from an existing coverage. Use the Duplicate command on an existing coverage. This will copy any feature objects on the coverage. Use the Rename command to give the coverage a new name. Change the coverage type. Expand2. Stream arc creation Expand1. Create feature arcs, nodes and vertices. In the Map module, create feature objects in the active coverage. Use the Create Feature Arc tool to create arcs in the map coverage. Begin creating a new arc by clicking in the Graphics Window at either arc end. If clicking on an existing feature node, vertex or arc, the new arc will snap to that object. Double-click or press the Enter key to terminate the arc. Use the Create Feature Node tool to create additional nodes alone or to split arcs. Expand2. Modify arcs. Feature arcs often need to be edited after initial creation. Expand1. Create additional vertices on arcs. Use the Create Feature Vertex tool to add vertices along arcs. Expand2. Refine the arc shape. Use the Select Feature Vertex tool and the Select Feature Node tool to move/edit existing arcs and refine the shape by dragging the nodes/vertices. Use the Select Feature Arc tool to move entire arcs . Expand3. Split arcs. An existing arc can be split by: Expand1. Converting a vertex to a node. Use the Select Feature Vertex tool and right-click on a vertex along an arc. Select the Convert to Node command to split the arc into two arcs. Expand2. Add a node the arc. Right-click on the raster image and select the Convert To | Feature Contours command to create a new map coverage with elevation contours. Expand2. Convert raster data to feature contours at a specified elevation. Right-click on the raster image and select the Convert To | Feature Contours at Given Elevation command. In the Create Contour Arc dialog, specify an elevation and click OK to generate a map coverage with contours created along the specified elevation. Expand3. Convert raster data to scatter set. Right-click on the raster image and select the Convert To | 2D Scatter command. In the Raster → Scatter dialog, give the scatter set a name and click OK to generate the scatter set. Expand4. Convert image data to 2D grid. Right-click on the raster image and select the Convert To | 2D Grid command. Expand5. Convert raster data to flood depth raster. A water surface elevation dataset must be available in the project for this process to function. Right-click on the raster image and select the Convert To | Flood Depths command. In the Select Geometry and Dataset dialog, select the geometry containing the water surface elevation dataset and then select the water surface elevation dataset. Save the new raster with the inundated depth data. Expand2. Interpolate image data. Expand1. Interpolate raster data to active coverage. Select and make active the map coverage where the raster data is to be interpolated. Right-click on the raster image and select the Interpolate | Active Coverage command. Expand2. Interpolate raster data to 2D Mesh. Select and make active the mesh where the raster data is to be interpolated. Right-click on the raster image and select the Interpolate | 2D Mesh command. Expand3. Interpolate raster data to scatter set. Select and make active the scatter set where the raster data is to be interpolated. Right-click on the raster image and select the Interpolate | 2D Scatter command. Expand4. Interpolate image data to 2D grid. Select and make active the 2D grid where the raster data is to be interpolated. Right-click on the raster image and select the Interpolate To | 2D Grid command. Expand4. Assign arc properties Select all arcs, right-click, and open the Arc Properties dialog and enter parameters. Double-click on most downstream arc, opening Arc Properties dialog, and turn on Most downstream arc of stream network. Use Display Options settings to show arc directions. Expand5. Correct arc directions If any arcs do not show as flowing towards the most downstream arc, correct it by doing one of the following: Right-click on the arc and use the Reverse Arc Direction command Or open the Toolbox and use the Reorient Stream Arcs tool. Expand6. Smooth streams Using the Select Feature Arc tool, select arc(s) and use the Redistribute right-click command. Use the Redistribute Vertices dialog to set the vertex distribution. Open the Toolbox . Open the Remove Adverse Slopes Tool and run the tool.

Expand6. Create 2D Grid
Open the Toolbox . Open the GSSHA 2D UGrid tool Enter the input coverage and other parameters, then run the tool.

Expand7. Define Land Use and Soil Data

Expand1. Import SSURGO file Use the File | Open... command to import GIS data files such as Shapefiles, MIF/MID files, Lidar files, or raster files. Alternatively, drag and drop the file into the Graphics Window in SMS. Expand2. Join SSURGO files Right-click on each downloaded shapefile and select Join NRCS Soil Data to open the Join NRCS Soil Data dialog. Change parameters and change file name if needed, and save.

Expand8. Clean Digital Dams
Open the Toolbox . Open the GSSHA Clean Dams tool. Select the parameters, then run the tool.

Expand9. GSSHA simulation setup.

Expand1. Create a new GSSHA simulation. After creating the components of a simulation, create a new GSSHA simulation. Right-click in the Project Explorer and select the New Simulations | GSSHA command. Expand2. Add GSSHA simulation components. To link components to the simulation, do one of the following. Right-click on the component and select the simulation name from the Apply To submenu. In the Project Explorer, click and drag items under the simulation object. Expand3. Set GSSHA model parameters. Right-click on the simulation and select the GSSHA Model Control command. Set the model parameters in the GSSHA Model Control dialog including: Precipitation Elevation Expand4. Mapping tables Right-click on the simulation and select GSSHA Mapping Tables to open the dialog. Set the model parameters in the GSSHA Mapping Tables dialog.

Expand10. Run the GSSHA simulation.
Right-click on the GSSHA simulation and select Save Project, Simulation and Run to run the simulation. Use the Simulation Run Queue to track the model run.

Expand11. Review results.

Expand1. Load solution files. The solution file should load after running the model assuming the Load Solution option was checked in the model wrapper before exiting the model run. If loading the solution file separately from the model run, do the following: Open the output files generated from the model run. Expand2. Review results datasets and data visualization. Expand1. Manually review dataset solutions. In the Project Explorer, click on solution dataset created from the simulation run and view results in the Graphics Window. Click through the time steps for each dataset to see changes over time in the Graphics Window. Expand2. Adjust the display options. Expand1. Set display options. Open the Display Options dialog. Set the general display options. Set general lighting options. Set display options for each module that is being used. Set contour options. Set vector options. Expand2. View display. Use the Rotate , Pan , and Zoom tools. Use the View menu commands found in the Display menu. Use the Frame command to center and resize the display as needed. Expand3. Adjust display. Review measurements to be plotted in step 2 of the Plot Wizard then click Finish. Review plot window. Expand2. Residual vs. Observed Data plot. Select Display | Plot Wizard to start the Plot Wizard. Select the "Residual vs. Observed Data" option on the left and click Next. Review measurements to be plotted in step 2 of the Plot Wizard then click Finish. Review plot window. Expand3. Error vs. Simulation plot. Select Display | Plot Wizard to start the Plot Wizard. Select the "Error vs. Simulation" option on the left and click Next. Select arcs, datasets, and time steps to be plotted. Review plot window. Expand4. Create and compare datasets. Select the Data | Dataset Toolbox menu command. In the Dataset Toolbox, compare datasets by subtracting the alternate dataset from the base dataset. New dataset can be generated in the Dataset Toolbox using the Data Calculator.
