Two basic approaches are provided in GMS for constructing a MODFLOW model: the model can be completely defined using the tools in the 3D Grid module, or the model can be defined with the aid of the feature objects in the Map module. Also, scatter points and solids can be used to define layer elevation, and boreholes can be used with TPROGS to create material sets for the 3D grid.
The basic steps in building a MODFLOW model include:
When a new MODLOW simulation has been initiated, it will appear under the 3D Grid or 3D Ugrid in the Project Explorer. Also in the Project Explorer, MODFLOW packages that are included in the simulation will be listed under the simulation.
Right-clicking on the simulation icon will produce a menu. Selecting the Properties command will bring up a Properties dialog. This dialog will show details about the simulation such as which version of MODFLOW is being used, where the simulation is being saved, if the simulation is steady state or transient, the number of stress periods, and run options. The dialog also contains a Notes tab where comments and other notes can be saved.
